Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza | Ma Yansong

Designed by MAD Architects under the direction of Ma Yansong, the Shenzhen Bay Culture Park subtly introduces organic forms into a dense urban grid. Viewed through a monochrome lens, the architecture is stripped of chromatic distractions, revealing its essential massing and fluid lines. Bathed in natural light, the finely textured facades take on a warm, sculptural quality, offering a quiet yet compelling counterpoint to the rigid, rectilinear skyscrapers that frame the site.

Grounded in a continuous, flowing landscape, the vast programmatic requirements are decentralized into a cluster of pebble-like volumes. Sunken courtyards and undulating slopes seamlessly interweave to create layered pedestrian journeys. These sweeping curves not only direct the eye but naturally soften the city’s hard edges. Ultimately, the park transcends its role as a cultural hub to become a vital urban void—a breathing space where one can pause and appreciate the subtle interplay of scale, form, and light.
